~Clear with Reminders https://slsrepo.com/links/clear-with-reminders/ Sat, 03 May 2014 21:48:04 GMT https://slsrepo.com?p=769 Clear by Realmac Software, the app I use for my To-Do lists, has received a major upgrade this week with support from Reminders.

We’ve been busy working away on the next big update to Clear, and today we’re thrilled to announce that Clear with Reminders is now available on the App Store. Set a reminder, and Clear will remind you across all your devices as Clear for Mac also gets this new feature today as well!

Reminders didn't change the way the app works, or cluttered the interface, the app now includes a simple tappable bell that opens a custom made date picker that will send a push notification to the time you set.
The update also includes sound packs as in-app purchase, but they are free if you purchased Realmac's Clear+ earlier this year.
This update is a great new addition to an app I use all the time. If you haven't checked out Clear yet, you really should. It's 4.99$ on the App Store.

~Picturelife https://slsrepo.com/links/picturelife/ Sat, 26 Apr 2014 21:02:59 GMT https://slsrepo.com?p=749 Loom, the service I used to backup and manage my photos alongside Dropbox, announced that they have been purchased by Dropbox, 2 weeks ago.
I migrated my photos to Dropbox with Loom's export system, and you can too until May 16, 2014. You will be able to keep any extra space you purchased for a year and every space you earned if you are a free user. Loom has been integrated into Dropbox's new Carousel app and while Carousel is nice, I have started using a new service to manage my photos alongside Dropbox. Picturelife.
Picturelife is the best way to manage all your photos in one place. It pulls your photos from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Dropbox and more services and the photos you upload with the mobile or desktop app and allows you to edit, manage and sort all of your photos in one place. For organization, it has smart albums, timeline (which allows you to edit the date if the photo if it's wrong!), tags (both Facebook style tags where you tag people's faces and Twitter style tags), captions, descriptions and powerful search. You can use either Picturelife's storage (first 5GB free) or you can use your own Amazon S3 Bucket. Other Picturelife users can send you pictures that you can save to your Picturelife and Picturelife allows you to share your pictures with just your family or friends with the Friends Stream and Family Stream, or you can share to social networks you connected to the service. And it has a Memories feature that shows you today (or this week) a few years back, which is really nice. There is a lot more I can say about it but I think you should try it yourself. You can also read more about it compared to Loom in this review by Bradley Chambers on The Sweet Setup. Create an account here and download the app from the App Store for free. It's the best photo management solution I have tried recently, and I plan on making a long review of it soon.

~MacStories 4.0 https://slsrepo.com/links/macstories-4-0/ Sat, 26 Apr 2014 20:01:26 GMT https://slsrepo.com?p=744

For MacStories 4.0, we wanted to get back to basics. We deleted the old design and codebase and decided to focus on what, ultimately, readers come to MacStories for: reading articles.

Earlier this week, Federico Viticci, one of my favorite writers, launched version 4.0 of his website MacStories. This is a complete redesign of a website I have been reading for a very long time with a delightful new reading experience.
If you haven't checked MacStories yet, now would be a good time.

~Riposte 1.6 https://slsrepo.com/links/riposte-1-6/ Sat, 22 Feb 2014 21:37:52 GMT https://slsrepo.com?p=720 Yesterday, version 1.6 of Riposte was released with native support for cross-posting to Twitter (with support for multiple Twitter accounts at once) for Pro users, support for OverShareKit and interface changes to make the app feel even more at home on iOS 7. Riposte was already updated with a new look for iOS 7 in September, but with version 1.6, Jared Sinclair imported his ideas from Unread into Riposte, got rids of all remaining gloss and shine and provided a simpler and more delightful look for Riposte. The Dark mode has also been updated and new fonts were added. Although I have been using Felix a lot more than Riposte lately 1, I think this is a great update and it makes Riposte a joy to use 2.

  1. I like Felix's iOS 7 design and the Puck better. The iPad version is also great too.

  2. I am thinking of using it a lot more on my iPhone.

~The Sweet Setup https://slsrepo.com/links/the-sweet-setup/ Sat, 30 Nov 2013 18:52:37 GMT https://slsrepo.com?p=688 The Sweet Setup is a new website by Shawn Blanc and friends to showcase the best apps for the iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Here's how Shawn described it:

We enjoy spending an inordinate amount of time and energy to research, test, and find the very best apps.
Who wants just any weather app? Not us. We want the best! And so do you. That’s why our goal is to help you (and ourselves) find the best apps for your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

I really like how the reviews are written on The Sweet Setup, like any good review it starts by describing the app, what the writer liked and what can be improved. But on The Sweet Setup, the review doesn't end here. Following the best app review, there's a review of a runner up, why the best app is better than it and at the end, a list of the apps that were tested. It's really nice. The Sweet Setup doesn't offer only reviews, but also includes tips and interviews which are quite good. Not sure where to start? Take the Dime Tour. I later continued to the best iPhone text editor and the best journaling app. If you are looking for the best app for a certain task, I highly recommend you to check out The Sweet Setup. It's the best place to find the best apps.

Appdated is a series of links I will post from time to time about apps I like that has been updated. It’s for when I got what to say about an update but it’s not enough for a long review.

And on this post of Appdated:

Launch Center Pro 2.0

One of my favorite apps, Launch Center Pro by Contrast got updated for iOS 7 on October 10. Federico Viticci wrote everything I have to say about it. Launch Center Pro is 2.99$ on the App Store.

iPhoto for iOS 7

I really like the new iPhoto. It’s 4.99$ on the App Store and free when you purchase a new iOS device.

Dropbox 3.0

The official Dropbox app was updated for iOS 7 and improved on almost every aspect of the app. There’s just one thing that annoys me, the update doesn’t include background uploading of photos…
Here’s Federico Viticci’s review of it.

Day One for iOS 7

The best journaling app is now ready for iOS 7 and also supports journaling music and daily step count from my iPhone 5s. Here’s what Federico Viticci had to say. Day One is 4.99$ on the App Store.

Tweetbot 3–3.2

Tweetbot 3 was released as a separate app in October 24. It’s a solid update that brings the app to iOS 7. On November 12, Tweetbot 3.1 was released with support for viewing links in the timeline view restored and support for setting your own text size. Tweetbot 3.2 was recently released with Night theme that can be activated with a two fingers swipe gesture (similar to the one in Riposte) and quick account switching feature (you can also sort your accounts now with drag and drop). Here is what Federico Viticci had to say about it and Shawn Blanc’s Review.

Pythonista 1.4

Pythonista is now ready for iOS 7 and also have support for iOS Contacts and Open In. Here is what Federico Viticci wrote about it. Pythonista is 6.99$ on the App Store.

iTranslate

My favorite translations app is now universal, iOS 7 ready and with support for speaking Hebrew words to translate them. iTranslate is free on the App Store.

~GoJGo https://slsrepo.com/links/gojgo/ Sat, 12 Oct 2013 12:03:39 GMT https://slsrepo.com?p=676 Stephen Hackett is one of my favorite writers on the web, he writes at 512 Pixels and is also a co-host in my favorite podcast The Prompt along with Federico Viticci and Myke Hurley. Stephen's son, Josiah, has a brain tumor and is a patient at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital at Memphis. I have been following Josiah's story for a few months now and he is a hero.
I encourage you to support Stephen and Josiah by donating to Team GoJGo in St. Jude's Marathon Weekend. Donating to St. Jude's will not only support Stephen, which means he will have more time to write quality content and reviews you'll enjoy but can also help save children's lives and help find cures to childhood cancer. I already donated, and I suggest you do to.

~Rodeo Blue https://slsrepo.com/links/rodeo-blue/ Sat, 12 Oct 2013 09:51:15 GMT https://slsrepo.com?p=671 Feed Wrangler is really a great service, but it's design on the website leaves much to desired. Preshit Deorukhkar was the first to try and change it with Feed Rango, his Chrome/Safari extension. Preshit also helped Ed Wellbrook make Rodeo, a better and more elegant Chrome/Safari extension. I used Feed Rango and used Rodeo for a while, but a thing that bothered me with Rodeo is that it doesn't match Feed Wrangler's colors. Rodeo uses Orange and Black colors while Feed Wrangler, on the site and iOS app, uses Blue colors. I wanted to change it - so I created Rodeo Blue - a Blue version of Rodeo. While I mainly access my Feed Wrangler streams with Reeder along with my Feedly and a Local Lightweight RSS Feed configured with Reeder, it's great to be have a way to access my feeds when I can't use the app. And now, accesing the site is a delightful experience. I only had time to package the Chrome extension, but I will package the Safari extension when I have the time.
You can start enjoying a more delightful Feed Wrangler experience by downloading the Chrome extension here.

I heard a lot about it but everytime I thought “Should I sign up?” I decided not to, because I couldn't find a use for it. It all changed when I read Shawn Blanc's Beginner’s Guide to Pinboard 2 weeks ago. I finally found a use for Pinboard, and have been using it heavily since signing up. Like Shawn, I decided to collect everything that is or was interesting to me, every link I clicked, every post I read on Reeder and the tabs I open on my browser. Shawn wrote everything you need to start using Pinboard - Bookmarklets, Apps, Tips and the most important thing - Why to use Pinboard. Signing up to Pinboard costs a one time fee of the number of users * $0.001, so the fee is currently 10.22$. I recommend you read Shawn's guide and sign up for Pinboard as soon as you can, because it's a great service and the earlier you join, the less you'll pay.
